The TCI program

Early Intervention and Primary Program

  • TCI's Education Program provides a full day, twelve month program for students starting at the age of three.
  • Students benefit from one-to-one instruction throughout the school day as well as some small group instruction when appropriate.
  • Research-based teaching procedures and individualized programs facilitate the development of skills across all curricular areas, including academic, language, social, leisure, play, community, vocational, domestic, work studies and self care skills.
  • All programming is tailor made to meet the individual educational needs of each student
  • Through the Harbour School, TCI is now able to provide the mainstreaming component needed for a well rounded education for a child with autism

Curriculum and teaching methods

Teaching methods

  • The Children's Institute uses Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) methodology as its teaching model. The effectiveness of ABA has been proven through extensive research and analysis to be the most effective way to teach children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD). We should add some references here, such as the Surgeon General's report on autism / NYstate clinical guideline technical report. I will attach a document with a summary of these references.
  • The TCI model uses a Verbal Behavior approach to language. Intensive language instruction is considered the strength of the programming at The Children's Institute. All programs are designed to increase verbal language skills as well as to improve receptive language skills.

Curriculum

The curricular goals for each student are 1) effective communication, 2) increased opportunities to engage in meaningful activities, and 3) an improved quality of life. We also target academic literacy, problem-solving, self-management, and play/social skills as curricular areas. We teach the 'whole child'. Our curriculum:

  • Only uses researched comprehensive teaching strategies
  • Focuses on building skills
  • Keeps children motivated to learn
  • Teaches understanding and use of language
  • Builds broader social skills
  • Teaches children how to communicate with and relate to their peers
  • Builds age appropriate and symbolic play skills
  • Increases conceptual thinking and cognitive skills

Assessment

TCI uses ongoing assessment and evaluation to make data-based decisions on program modifications.

  • Students have their learning performance reviewed daily.
  • TCI continuously evaluates the progress of the student through data collection and graphing.
  • Daily data is collected on the student's performance in all areas. This allows us to easily see when new skills are mastered and goals are achieved.
  • Data also indicates struggles a student may be having allowing an opportunity to revise the teaching strategy and re-approach the goal.
  • A weekly assessment report is sent to each family detailing what their child learned that week in school.
  • Parents are informed about the successes their child making on a daily basis giving parents the motivation they need to continue facing the daily challenges of raising a child with special needs.
